It should be a goal of every patient to keep their teeth for life! For this reason, preventive care is important throughout your lifetime, no matter how old you are. An old dentist friend of our practice used to joke, “You only need to brush the teeth you want to keep.” How true! By establishing good oral care routines, including at home and professional cleanings at an interval that is appropriate for you, you should be able to have a healthy, bright smile for years to come!
Here are some ways you can do your part in maintaining good oral health:
Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day, especially before bedtime, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to brush your tongue to removed trapped food particles and keep your breath fresh.
Floss at least once per day to remove plaque between teeth that cannot be reached with your toothbrush. Mouthwash is an additional aid that kills decay-causing bacteria and freshens breath.
Eat a balanced diet that includes nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables. Avoid excess sugar, especially sticky or gummy treats. When you do choose sweet treats, be sure to brush well afterwards.
Visit our office for a professional cleaning and exam at the recommended interval or at least once every six months.
Ask us if dental sealants are an option for you to protect the deeper grooves in back teeth, where decay often starts.
If you participate in sports, be sure to always wear a mouth guard.
